Democracy
Perry World House’s democracy program harnesses Penn research and expertise to investigate and analyze challenges to democracy around the world.

About PWH's Democracy Programming
Democracy globally is in decline. By some estimates, 71 percent of the world’s population lives in autocracies. Compounding the threat is extreme political polarization; sophisticated authoritarian efforts to discredit democracy and spread disinformation; religious fundamentalism; and the erosion of the norms and guardrails that safeguard democracy.
PWH will study democracy as a lens through which to view global politics, international human rights, and the future of international order and governance. Guided in part by Sarah Banet-Weiser and Sarah Bush, the program aims to engage and inform Penn and the broader global affairs community on emerging challenges and opportunities around the world; to highlight Penn scholarship and initiatives for policymakers; and to bring to Penn’s campus some of the most influential leaders, activists, and scholars who are advancing democratic ideals globally.
